The company intends to use the waste heat to generate low-pressure steam using a waste boiler. Based on the amount of heat that needs to be balanced in the current system, I calculated the heat exchange area required for this waste boiler. I asked other units that have waste boilers, and it was found that when such boilers are in use, the liquid level is kept at around 50%. Should the calculated heat exchange area be doubled during the design phase? If not, how should it be calculated? Thank you, expert
I don’t know why the liquid level is controlled at around 50%? The budget for a waste heat boiler should be calculated based on known parameters such as flue gas characteristics, flue gas volume, flue gas temperature, steam temperature, steam pressure, as well as the structure of the waste heat boiler.
My useless boiler is similar to a regular U-tube heat exchanger; the steam drum and the tubes are integrated together, with plenty of buffer space at the top
From what the original poster seems to mean, the main purpose is heat exchange, so it should be viewed as a heat exchanger; as for the calculations, they are carried out to meet the requirements of your heat exchange process. Personally, I suggest that after calculating the heat exchange area, the area correction factor can be increased slightly, but there is no need to double the area.
Liquid level control at 50% generally refers to controlling the liquid level in the drum at 50%. In the case of a waste boiler without a drum, there is definitely a gas space present. However, regardless of the type of waste boiler, the heat exchange tubes must be submerged in water; they cannot be dry. So there is no need to increase your heat exchange area any further.
