What I want to write are very simple opening phrases for everyday conversations that most of us use. The main function of an opening statement is that it allows one to start talking nonsense after that. We will keep using them, but we rarely think about what direct connection there might be between those opening phrases and the meaning that follows. Understanding the differences in each meaning better can help us prepare our conversations more effectively. 1) In fact, or as a matter of fact, is used to emphasize that what follows is true (of course, only you know whether it’s true or not). – In fact, the book was very boring. - In fact, no one knew exactly what to do at that time. 2) Actually also means “in fact,” but it has the function of emphasizing that what is stated later is the really important news – Actually, I haven’t done any of my work yet. (Oh my God! If the exam is tomorrow, this is absolutely huge! ) 3) To be honest with you, to put it frankly, that picture of paint was created when I was feeling uneasy; I first wanted to show my sincerity, and then suddenly my courage surged and I started talking non-stop. So speak slowly, with some glides, and you can emphasize the words that follow the connection. - To be honest with you, I really have no idea what he just said either. (I actually don’t know what he just said.) 4) “To tell you the truth” can be used more frequently than “To be honest with you”. - To tell you the truth, I’d been trying to fool you for a long time. “ (Acknowledging the listener’s psychological shadow area) 5) Quite frankly – “To be honest” or “Frankly speaking”: Quite frankly, I don’t think we will ever succeed. 6) I’m afraid I have to say “I’m afraid I must admit” – these are words I’ve managed to utter only by mustering up courage; using this opening sentence can help me get started. I’m afraid I have to say that I know very little about you. Although they are all very simple things, writing them down serves two purposes: it helps me to summarize them, and I also hope it can be of some small help to you.
From the bottom of my heart, I really, really want to chat with you!;P
