Solving the problems related to gas treatment and the treatment of high-concentration organic wastewater simultaneously, as well as using biogas from industrial processes to supplement and replace natural gas, are among the main objectives for the development of new energy sources outlined in the 12th Five-Year Plan. Aiming to address the issues related to the treatment and utilization of cassava starch and alcohol wastewater, Anning Starch Co., Ltd. carried out research and development on this project, and with the technical support of the Biological Engineering Center at China Agricultural University, developed a fully automated control system. This technology utilizes rapid and efficient anaerobic fermentation to produce biogas from the high-concentration organic wastewater generated during cassava processing; the biogas is then purified and compressed to create compressed biofuel, which is used as a fuel for household and vehicle use. Recently, Anning Company has increased the daily production of biogas generated from wastewater fermentation to 20,000 cubic meters, with the output of biomethane remaining stable at over 12,000 cubic meters per day. According to the latest vehicle exhaust test reports, the carbon monoxide emissions from vehicles using biogas purified from biogas are 20% lower than those from vehicles using gasoline, while carbon dioxide emissions are reduced by 99%. Nanning has extensive cultivation of cassava and sugarcane; as a result, there are many starch-producing enterprises. Wastewater treatment has always posed a significant problem for these enterprises. Both cassava starch and alcohol wastewater are high-concentration organic wastewaters, and the volume of such waste is particularly large; approximately 15 tons of waste liquid are generated for every ton of starch or alcohol produced. If these wastewater streams are discharged directly without proper treatment, they will cause serious damage to the local and downstream water environments. Therefore, the development of this project can not only serve as an alternative energy source but also help address the issues related to the treatment and utilization of cassava starch and alcohol wastewater. Using natural gas is environmentally friendly and cost-effective; it can save around 0.25 yuan per kilometer compared to using gasoline. Based on an assumption of 300 kilometers per day per taxi, the cost difference between using oil and gas is around 75 yuan. “Based on this calculation, a taxi in normal operation can recoup its modification costs in about 4 months, with each taxi generating an additional net income of around 20,000 yuan per year. So, can cheaper biogas-purified natural gas be used in private cars? It is reported that the biogas purified into natural gas that is currently produced is manufactured to the highest standards for maximum performance, and can be marketed for use in taxis, buses, and other applications. As the project develops on an industrial scale, it will not be long before citizens can make use of this biogas-purified natural gas.
