A project is currently underway to treat oily wastewater from the electrodialysis emulsion layer in an oil refinery. The emulsion layer contains a high amount of oil, and chemical treatment methods are not sufficient to meet the standards required for discharging the wastewater. Currently, demulsification using chemicals, air flotation, and oil skimming are being employed, followed by multi-media filtration. However, the water after filtration still contains coke powder, resulting in high turbidity. There are now complete sets of equipment and effective processes available for treating water from electrodialysis emulsions. Those who have experience with similar projects are welcome to share their insights.

It is now known that the demulsifier is not effective, but it cannot be replaced. The emulsion layer contains a high level of oil, and air flotation alone cannot solve the problem. Even after treatment with chemicals and air flotation, the water still contains a lot of oil and carbon particles, and the flocculants do not work
Relying solely on electrodesalination to treat emulsified water may not necessarily solve this problem; it’s best to first analyze the composition of the wastewater, optimize the formulation of the demulsifier, and using that in combination with electrodesalination could yield better results :):):):)
We adopted a treatment process consisting of an inclined plate/coalescing pressure oil remover plus cyclonic air flotation (CDFU), which effectively handled oily wastewater from electrodialysis processes. Even when the oil content in the incoming wastewater varied significantly, the oil content in the treated wastewater remained well below 100 mg/L. In the case of electrodialysis wastewater where the oil content ranged from several dozen mg/L to over 20%, such severe fluctuations were reduced to a minimum of 10 mg/L and a maximum of 70 mg/L after treatment using pressure oil removal and cyclonic air flotation. The sample image shows an oil content of 10.1% at the inlet and 44.6 mg/L at the outlet
