I have just started working in wastewater treatment, and I’m not sure how to learn this industry. I currently work at a company, but there are no seniors there to guide me. Everything needs to be learned on one’s own*. I also want to learn *, but I always feel unsure about where to start; first, I need to become familiar with various processes and equipment. But the manufacturing process seems okay; there are too many types of equipment, and it’s impossible to remember them all just by reading. I also have another question: for example, once the treatment process has been determined, how should the dimensions and parameters of various components (residence time, effective volume) be calculated, as well as how should the selection of equipment and pumps be determined? Is there a simple way to calculate it? (There’s no need for calculations like those done by design institutes, but an idea of the size is needed.) I’ve seen many calculation methods online, but in many of them, various values are simply set arbitrarily; I have no idea how to determine these values or in which standards to look for them. Could some experts recommend a book suitable for a beginner like me? It is hoped that in the future it will be possible to, based on the analysis results and experience from similar industries in handling such issues, select the appropriate processes, and then carry out a simple selection of various structures and equipment – in other words, to arrive at a basic plan. From an operational perspective, chemicals, energy, and the operation and maintenance of equipment account for a large portion of costs. Energy and the operation and maintenance of equipment are closely related to each other, so it is essential to study equipment thoroughly. The equipment designed by design institutes is based on certain principles, but some of it does not meet the actual needs in use. In practice, it is necessary to ask more questions, think more, and then study the entire operational system, including the structures involved; this way, one can gain a general understanding.
