It is necessary to ensure that there are no delaminations in the cross-section of the shell steel plate at the locations where holes are to be made; this requires ultrasonic testing. In some cases, ultrasonic testing is also required after the holes have been drilled, and the acceptance standard for ultrasonic testing is one level higher than that for testing the raw material. The plates at the joint and the shell are subjected to tensile and bending stresses; therefore, it is common for there to be requirements for tensile tests in the thickness direction for the shell material as well.
