Make up for the lack of knowledge in pumps, valves, and pipelines

To all the experts in this field, I’m a graduate in applied chemistry; I haven’t studied chemical engineering or related subjects before. I currently work at a company that deals with water treatment, using PVC materials. I lack knowledge regarding pumps, valves, and pipelines – such as how to select pumps, what the functions of different types of valves are, and how to install pipelines. What do you suggest I do, based on your experience? ? How can one make up for the deficiencies in learning this area? ?
I graduated in chemical engineering. Apart from the principles of chemical engineering, the knowledge I acquired in school has little to do with engineering practices; things like valves and pipelines were something I learned on my own after graduation, so I had to start from scratch
