I would like to ask the experts in process engineering: how is the length-diameter ratio of horizontal storage tanks determined? I am currently designing a horizontal storage tank; the volume is known, but the diameter and length cannot be determined. So I would like to ask: does that manual specify or provide a range for this horizontal length-to-diameter ratio?

There are no specific requirements; the gas-liquid separator does have a standard height-to-diameter ratio of 3:1, but this is not mandatory – it should be determined based on the overall layout of the equipment.

So where did you get this ratio from? Or is it based on empirical values obtained through experimentation? There must be some source anyway
There is no standard; it is arranged according to the manufacturing process, and design calculations can be used for that purpose
One can use Master Hua’s “golden ratio” selection method – choose a length-to-diameter ratio of 0.618
This is done in accordance with separator standards (API 12J). The original standards specified this requirement, but it was later removed from the standards as they were updated; however, we have continued to follow this practice ever since.
