Beijing, October 11, Economic Daily (Reporter: Du Fang) – The Chinese Academy of Sciences announced today that Chinese scientists have made a significant breakthrough in the field of ultra-cold atom quantum simulation. A joint team from the University of Science and Technology of China and Peking University theoretically proposed for the first time in the world and experimentally achieved the artificial creation of two-dimensional spin-orbit coupling in ultracold atoms, thereby measuring the novel topological quantum properties arising from this spin-orbit coupling. The research findings were published in the latest issue of the internationally renowned journal Science. A review in the journal Science stated that this work “holds great potential for studying exotic phenomena beyond traditional condensed matter physics.” “Ultra-cold atoms refer to atoms that are at temperatures close to absolute zero. Achieving artificial spin-orbit coupling in ultra-cold atoms is considered by the international community to be one of the most promising methods for making breakthroughs in the study of novel states of matter, and related research abroad has won Nobel Prizes on multiple occasions. ”Pan Jianwei, an academician at the University of Science and Technology of China and the first corresponding author of the paper, said that this significant breakthrough will advance research on novel topological quantum states such as topological superfluids and topological superconductors, thereby having a major impact on our deeper understanding of the material world.
