Dear experts, I have a question. Our wastewater treatment process involves micro-electrolysis + Fenton’s reaction + facultative anaerobic treatment + anaerobic treatment + aerobic treatment. The plant will be shut down during winter; what should be done with the activated sludge? We are in northern Hebei, where the lowest temperatures reach minus 20 degrees, with temperatures usually around minus 5 degrees.
How much water is used per day, and what is the size of the pool? How many months is parking suspended in winter? If it is shut down for 3 months with no wastewater at all, it is recommended to empty the equipment and pipelines; there is no need to drain the water from the tanks, and the system can be left shut down. Sludge will be reintroduced for cultivation next year.
Empty the pool and drain the pipes. When spring brings blossoms, bury it in the mud again.
Can a film be laid over the pool opening and insulated with a cotton blanket, then drive it in spring? Does sludge have absolutely no chance of survival?
Insulation can be added, which provides some degree of thermal insulation. However, after spending a winter without water inflow or aeration, restarting the cultivation process is slower than simply adding fresh sludge.

I’m in southern Jiangsu, where the lowest temperatures in winter are around -10°C. Before parking the vehicle, I add some nutrient-rich methanol or similar substances; I then let it sit for half a day before turning it off. Before starting the vehicle again, I aerate it and add nutrients. I’ve been doing this for several years, and there have been no major problems.
