I’m just starting to learn about falling film design. What do terms like single-effect, double-effect, and multi-effect mean? Additionally, the minimum flow rate has been determined; how is the circulation volume determined? I hope experts from all walks of life can offer some guidance.

Put simply, heating causes the solvent in the solution (which is not necessarily an aqueous solution) to evaporate; that’s all, and this is known as single-effect evaporation. But if the steam evaporated by the first evaporator (which we call secondary steam) is then used to heat another evaporator, it is called double-effect evaporation. The steam evaporated by the second evaporator is then used in the third one... three-effect evaporation. ...and so on. I’m not sure if it helped you.
If you’re just starting out, you need to find a book to read; it explains the principles in detail and is easy to learn. Otherwise, it’s pointless to worry without knowing where to begin.
The so-called multi-effect evaporation or multi-effect distillation refers to the number of times steam is utilized, with this number representing the number of effects. Subdivision can also be divided into co-current, counter-current, cross-flow, etc. As for the falling film, it is the liquid film flowing from the top downward.
