I seem to have read in that book that compressed air should be blown in through this hole before pressure testing – what is the purpose of that?

Compressed air is used for leak testing during the manufacturing phase; during operation, if there is a leak in the reinforcement ring, it will leak out through the threaded hole (which serves as a signal hole)

Thank you. I understand the latter part, but I’m still not quite clear on the former part: Since the gasket serves as a reinforcing element, it’s sufficient to weld it discontinuously to the cylinder body. Why is it necessary to ensure the sealing quality of the gasket?
I’ve never seen reinforcement done by intermittent welding.
It is mainly to check the quality of the weld joints between the take over and the shell; in the event of a leak, it may not be visible as it is covered by the reinforcement ring during the hydrostatic test...
The reinforcement ring can be pressurized with compressed air, allowing one to use soapy water to check for leaks between the pipe and the reinforcement ring inside
Threaded holes are used for ensuring airtightness; they are used to check the airtightness of the reinforcement rings, as specified in either GB150 or the standards related to reinforcement rings
I’m hearing about intermittent welding for the first time. . . What should be done if there’s a leak?
