As the title suggests, under what circumstances does a distillation column have only a distillation section? Let’s discuss this and give some suggestions, thank you!
If it is only required that the light components contain no heavy components, there is no requirement regarding the content of light components in the heavy components at the bottom of the tower; the feed is at the bottom of the tower, and the tower has only a distillation section.
Isn’t only the distillation section what makes up a distillation tower?
Generally, the requirements for the light component content in the product at the bottom of the tower are not very high; therefore, it is unnecessary to use a stripping section – feed can be supplied directly to the bottom of the tower, with the entire tower functioning as a distillation section.
For a distillation column using batch distillation, the feed is added once at the bottom of the column, and the entire column serves as the distillation section.

If there is only a distillation section, then the feed is at the bottom of the tower, and everything above the feed constitutes the distillation section. There are several situations: 1. To save energy, the feed is preheated by waste heat to the dew point, so that q is close to 0; in this case, the vapor phase constitutes the majority, or there are a large amount of light components with very few heavy components ； 2. Batch distillation ； 3. The tower bottom has low requirements for light impurities ； I hope experts will continue to add more!
