The Design Code for Vertical Cylindrical Welded Steel Oil Tanks GB50341 requires that settlement observation devices be installed at the lower part of the tank wall. The use of the word “should” in this standard implies that it is not mandatory to install such devices; so under what circumstances is their installation necessary? Are there relevant guidelines to support this, and what are the specific practices? How is it represented in the drawings? If any expert has relevant drawings or photos, please share them.
In practice, it is easy to measure settlement as long as the elevation before basic settlement is known.
The elevations are all determined using several other relatively stable reference points within the factory.
