To carry out a reaction now, it is necessary to use 304 stainless steel for transporting liquid nitrogen, with the temperature ranging from -60 to -70 degrees. It was stated in 20801 that a low-temperature impact test is required when the temperature is below -20 degrees. There are three exemption clauses, but I can’t understand them. All three conditions for exempting the impact test at this temperature are met, so no impact test is required. 1) The design temperature is above -196°C. 2) The carbon content of the material is greater than 0.1% (for 304, it is generally less than 0.08%), and the material has undergone solution treatment (standard requirements for 304 specify solution heat treatment at the time of production). 3) The carbon content of the weld filler metal is not greater than 0.1% (the carbon content of several commonly used electrodes, such as 304, 304L, 308, and 308L, is all less than 0.1%)
:) Liquid nitrogen is just -195.8°C, right? For this type, austenitic stainless steel is used: the base material generally does not require impact testing (EU standards seem to require it), while the weld metal does need it (if the designed metal temperature is below -100, impact testing is necessary; in other words, impact testing is required as part of the welding procedure qualification)

Hello, I would like to ask: in the low-temperature impact test, the impact test on the welded joints is only carried out as part of the weld evaluation, and the on-site welding can be performed using the parameters specified in that evaluation. Does this mean that no additional test specimens need to be taken for impact testing of the on-site welded joints?

Do you mean product test specimens? This generally isn’t necessary. It is to be carried out only when required by the drawings or construction codes
