The eccentric butterfly valve experienced a broken valve stem after operating on the customer’s equipment for about three months. The operating conditions on-site are 8 kilograms of compressed air at room temperature; the valve stem is made of 316 stainless steel. Could someone help determine whether this is a case of fatigue fracture?
It seems that the break occurred at the fitting location; it could be due to stress concentration or an issue with the material of the valve stem. It’s best to carry out some calculations first. To do this, it’s necessary to know the diameter of the valve stem, the size of the valve opening, the pressure difference, and other parameters. By taking into account the torque exerted by the actuator or gearbox, it’s possible to assess the torsional stress.
