Hello everyone, for the overall external heating of the equipment, which is better: the use of a heat exchanger or a steam trap?
1. All equipment shares one steam trap, and the pipelines connected on-site may have many bends, making it difficult to arrange them properly. 2. Unless precise calculations are done, using a single steam trap for multiple lines is likely to cause overload; therefore, for safety reasons, it is better to use one steam trap per line.
Here, there is external heating for the reactor; there are many heating pipelines, but the overall heating load is not high. Is there a significant difference in the heat tracing effect of the two types?
It is advisable to provide a separate drain valve for each steam user, and each drain valve can be equipped with a bypass line for its maintenance. If a drain valve is installed, the amount of water drained during the initial preheating stage may not be sufficient. If the steam trap is not selected properly, installing a steam trap may result in poor drainage or ineffective steam removal. When installing many drain valves, attention should be paid to the location of the downstream condensate main pipe. If the main pipe is located under the ceiling and heating equipment is installed on the floor, it is advisable to install a check valve at the end of the drain valve before connecting it to the condensate main pipe located at a higher level; otherwise, back pressure may prevent proper drainage.

A single device is equipped with several sections of heat tracing pipes; it’s certainly better to have multiple steam traps. However, considering cost, space requirements, and pipeline layout, each case needs to be analyzed on a case-by-case basis. I have also worked on similar projects; there was a horizontal storage tank, with the heat tracing divided into 8 sections, and 6 sets of steam traps were installed. The pipes did not have any upward bends to prevent poor local insulation performance.
