On November 12, 2023, the Lianhua Mountain Tunnel, the control project of the Huizhou-Haifeng pipeline project – the longest drill-and-blast tunnel under construction in China’s oil and gas pipeline industry – was successfully completed. This achievement laid a solid foundation for the operation of the entire pipeline network and set a new record for drill-and-blast tunnels used in this industry; it serves as a model for the construction of other long and large-scale pipelines in this field. 　　The Lianhua Mountain Tunnel is located in Huidong County, Guangdong Province. It is a key project of the Huizhou–Haifeng main route project in Guangdong and constitutes an important part of the province’s main natural gas pipeline network. The completion of the Huizhou-Haifeng trunk line project will further enhance the role of this route in connecting the eastern Guangdong region to the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area’s energy network, and it is of great significance for optimizing the energy structure of the eastern Guangdong region and achieving green and sustainable economic development in the area. 　　During the survey and design phase, taking into account factors such as the significant topographical variations, fragmented terrain, and numerous boulders in the areas around Lianhua Mountain, the Southwest Branch conducted 21 site selection attempts, developed 5 alternative design proposals, and after 4 rounds of coordination regarding pipeline locations and construction plans, arrived at a design solution tailored specifically for the Lianhua Mountain Tunnel. The Southwest Branch, considering that the Lianhua Mountain Tunnel is a long rock tunnel, designed a construction plan that utilizes the TBM method and the drill-and-blast method, as well as plans for pipeline installation, welding, and the installation of pipe supports and clamps. To ensure safe construction, the Southwest Branch developed 10 specific construction measures and conducted risk assessments, thereby ensuring precise tunnel construction and its successful completion.
