Our company’s products require the use of large amounts of liquid sodium hydroxide during production. At present, we use liquid caustic produced by the ion-exchange membrane method. The manufacturer states that the allowable residual level of sodium chlorate is below 10 ppm; in reality, however, this level is between 2 and 3 ppm. Such residues have a serious impact on the quality of the products, and it is not possible to remove them. I wonder whether liquid caustic produced by the diaphragm method contains sodium chlorate? Or could the content be reduced a bit? Could you also recommend some companies that produce and sell liquid caustic using the diaphragm process? Thank you!

In caustic soda, sodium chlorate is difficult to remove by conventional chemical methods, other than at the source (through sulfate backflow and control of sodium chlorate in brine). It is recommended that the original poster consult companies specializing in bipolar membrane electrodialysis technology; they should have ways to decompose trace amounts of chlorates using electrolysis.
