Why does the shaft seal steam in a back-pressure turbine need to be cooled, and why is there also a bypass line? There are many pipelines at the lower part of the turbine cylinder – what is their purpose? To balance things out? Shaft seal?

This post was last edited by libingtaoff8 on 2017-8-10 at 18:17 – It’s nitrogen for the shaft seals of back-pressure steam turbines! The steam that leaks from the shaft seal goes to the seal extractor, which removes some of the leaked steam. The pipes located below the cylinder are generally used for drainage; they are closed under normal conditions and opened during startup! It's better with pictures! I hope the original poster can post a picture!
Except for small turbines, larger turbines, whether under backpressure or of the condensing type, all have shaft seal extraction to prevent steam leakage; condensing turbines also require a vacuum level to be maintained. Nitrogen serves as the gas seal for the bearing.

The earliest foreign models didn’t have coolers; the cooler is supposed to ensure negative pressure.
