Our company uses high-speed pumps to transport slurry; due to crystallization and blockages in the inlet pipelines, it is necessary to flush them regularly with ammonia water, sometimes on a continuous basis. Recently, the material concentration has increased, resulting in more frequent pipeline flushing; however, overall there hasn’t been much change. After operating for a period of time, this issue arose in the diffuser. We analyzed this phenomenon – some believe it is due to changes in the material concentration, which causes erosion, while I think it might be the ammonia added that leads to slight cavitation during pump operation. Perhaps this does not have a significant impact in terms of flow rate or pressure, and the requirements can still be met, but it still causes damage to the equipment. Especially recently, due to changes in the material concentration and more frequent pipeline flushing, the high concentration of ammonia at the inlet has exacerbated the problem of cavitation. I would appreciate it if some experts could give me some guidance – what exactly causes this situation?

What material are the other components made of? Does this type of corrosion also occur?
It’s not cavitation; no honeycomb pitting was seen. In the case of cavitation, the impeller also suffers corresponding damage. Personally, I think it’s corrosion and high-speed erosion; I’m not sure about the medium, the material of the pump body, or the temperature and geometry
