There is currently a fixed-tube-sheet heat exchanger whose design pressure, design temperature, fluid, volume, and material for both the tube side and the shell side meet the requirements for simple pressure vessels. However, since this heat exchanger has a fixed tube sheet and convex end caps at both ends of the tube side, the definition of a simple pressure vessel states that such a vessel consists of a cylinder, a flat cover, and convex end caps (excluding hemispherical end caps), or it can be composed of two convex end caps. Can this heat exchanger then be classified as a simple pressure vessel, and thus does it not require registration in accordance with the pressure vessel regulations?
