According to the calculation model in GB150, the thickness of the smaller end of a high-neck flange is the same as that of the connected cylinder wall. However, according to the equipment flange standard 47023, the thickness of the smaller end of a flange may be 3 mm greater than that of the cylinder wall. How should this be determined?
When calculating the strength, using the same thickness for the small end of the flange as that of the cylinder will certainly yield correct results. What I want to know is whether it’s acceptable if the thickness of the thin layer is 3 mm greater than the thickness of the cylinder If using the calculation model of GB150 is not feasible, it seems acceptable according to the 47023 standard.

In my opinion, the container flange can be 3 millimeters thicker than the cylinder body (similar regulations apply to the 150 series as well); this is based on welding considerations. Since the diameter of the container flange is larger, it can be handled in a similar manner to the joints between cylinder sections: for most cylinder bodies, submerged arc welding is used, and a difference of 3 millimeters does not affect the quality of welding. Moreover, the grooves made between cylinder sections are relatively large, and the alignment distance between them is also wide; as a result, after welding, a groove that is slightly higher on one end and slightly lower on the other end is naturally formed. This is equivalent to having undergone thinning, and a smooth transition can be considered to exist between the two. Therefore, for welding between large-diameter tube sections or flanges, if the gap is within 3 millimeters, there is no need to consider thinning anymore.
