Regarding the expansion joints of heat exchangers

The question might seem a bit naive, but I’ve never been able to figure it out: some designs of shell and tube heat exchangers include expansion joints, and when these expansion joints are stretched, does the entire shell elongate (relatively), and will the heat exchange tubes inside also be stretched? Is it equivalent to being under tension?
No, it should stretch as a whole
