At around 6:40 p.m. today, a fire occurred at CNPC Dalian Petrochemical Branch; it is said that the fire started in the raw material pumps located in the company’s catalytic and distillation areas, with the burning material being crude oil.

The lack of fire-fighting skills among the workers at CNPC’s Dalian facility is the reason for the major fires that have occurred there in recent years. The crude oil has a high ignition point and poor fluidity, requiring heating in order to be pumped. During a fire, spraying water to cool down is very effective for extinguishing the fire. If the workers on site had fire-fighting skills, there wouldn’t have been such a big fuss.
I’m very puzzled: the operating temperature of the catalyst feed pump is not very high, and it doesn’t exceed the ignition point of the feed oil – so why can a fire still occur? There is serious suspicion of improper handling. Looking forward to the results of the accident investigation.
