Dimethylformamide (DMF) is a colorless and transparent liquid that is miscible with water and most organic solvents. Pure dimethylformamide has a distinct odor, while industrial-grade or deteriorated dimethylformamide has a fishy smell due to the presence of impurities such as dimethylamine. Its name derives from the fact that it is a dimethyl-substituted form of formamide (the amide of formic acid), with both methyl groups attached to the N (nitrogen) atom. It is a common solvent in chemical reactions. As a high-boiling polar (hydrophilic) aprotic solvent, it facilitates the SN2 reaction mechanism. Dimethylformamide is produced using methyl formate and dimethylamine. Dimethylformamide is unstable in the presence of strong bases such as sodium hydroxide or strong acids such as hydrochloric acid or sulfuric acid (especially at high temperatures), and it hydrolyzes to form formic acid and dimethylamine, with the equation being HCON(CH3)2 + H2O → (CH3)2NH + HCOOH.
