It has succeeded in using waste methanol to reduce the levels of total nitrogen in wastewater, turning waste into a valuable resource and achieving both good environmental benefits and economic advantages. Total nitrogen is one of the important indicators for measuring water quality. Many companies use sodium acetate and glucose as auxiliary chemicals when treating total nitrogen in wastewater; this method is not only expensive but also yields unsatisfactory results. To this end, after repeated experiments and analyses by the company’s production department, it was found that using methanol effectively reduces the total nitrogen level in wastewater. Therefore, the company pursued technical research and development to create an automatic dosing device that uses the waste methanol from the resin regeneration process in the hydrogen peroxide system as an auxiliary reagent, which is then added to the wastewater treatment tank to significantly reduce total nitrogen levels. Over the past year since the installation was put into operation, the wastewater treatment system has functioned stably. The total nitrogen level in the discharged wastewater has been kept strictly below 15 mg/L, which is far below the specified limit of 30 mg/L; as a result, the discharge meets regulatory requirements. This setup enables the company to save millions of yuan each year in wastewater treatment costs.
