Everyone has crossed roads before; roads are something familiar to us all. As times have progressed, the old paths have been replaced by wide asphalt roads. Are pumps needed for asphalt roads? Don’t pumps transport flowing materials? Yes, pumps are not directly used for asphalt pavements, but asphalt needs to be transported using asphalt pumps! There are several types of asphalt: coal tar pitch, petroleum asphalt, and natural asphalt. Asphalt is almost solid or semi-solid at room temperature, and it needs to be heated to very high temperatures in order to become fluid. It would be more accurate to say that what is being transported is high-temperature asphalt rather than ordinary asphalt; and for being able to transport asphalt, asphalt pumps certainly have their special features. The material of asphalt pumps must first be heat-resistant; it is generally made of cast steel, which has high hardness as well as heat resistance. Secondly, the pump body must be equipped with a thermal insulation jacket; if it lacks such a jacket, then the piping system must have insulation measures, and in applications involving asphalt, the source of heat for insulation is usually high-temperature hot oil or steam. Asphalt pumps are positive displacement pumps; after transporting asphalt, residual asphalt remains in the pump chamber. When the pump is started again, the asphalt in the chamber must be cleaned out or kept in a flowing state. There are two ways to do this: either use steam to flush the entire pipeline including the pump, or maintain a continuous heat supply in the chamber to prevent the asphalt from solidifying.
