In the typical processes of Category 10 – oxidation processes, as listed in \"Highly Regulated Hazardous Chemical Processes (2013)\", the Claus process for gas desulfurization is mentioned. However, the key equipment listed under Category 10 is the oxidation reactor, and such a device is not used in the Claus process. Therefore, I would like to ask experts: what is the basis for classifying the Claus process as an oxidation process? Moreover, safety control requirements for such processes include a safety relief system – which type of equipment in the Claus process is this system intended for?
The Claus process for sulfur recovery involves the incomplete combustion of hydrogen sulfide in air to produce sulfur; it is a typical oxidation process.
Pay special attention to monitoring the oxidation process: Oxidation is the process of losing electrons in a chemical reaction involving electron transfer, that is, a process in which the oxidation state increases. The oxidation of most organic compounds involves the reactants gaining oxygen or losing hydrogen. A process involving oxidation reactions is an oxidation process. Common oxidizing agents include: air, oxygen, hydrogen peroxide, potassium chlorate, potassium permanganate, nitrates, etc. Klaus sulfur recovery is used to treat the acidic gases from low-temperature methanol washing, converting H2S in these gases into elemental sulfur. First, one-third of the H2S in the combustion furnace reacts with oxygen to produce SO2; then, the remaining H2S and the resulting SO2 undergo a Claus reaction in the presence of a catalyst to produce sulfur. The main reaction equations are: H2S + 3/2 O2 = SO2 + H2O; 2H2S + SO2 = 3S + 2H2O. This is an oxidation process that is subject to regulation, and the key process parameters to be monitored are the temperature and pressure inside the oxidation reactor ; Stirring speed in the oxidation reactor ; Oxidant flow rate ; Ratio of reaction materials ; Vapor oxygen content ; Peroxide content, etc. Kraus sulfur recovery does not have oxidation reactors; in my opinion, all equipment that could cause sudden changes in temperature and pressure should be controlled
I’ve learned it; I now have a better understanding of the oxidation process
Since there are no reaction vessels, measures related to them need not be designed; however, designs for pressure, temperature, interlocks, and other such elements must be adjusted accordingly.
