It depends on the type of reactor; for example, in the case of fixed-bed reactors, the reaction conditions are mild, so it’s not necessary to collect kinetic data. In such cases, scaling up can be done using empirical methods or similarity principles. However, with more complex reactors, kinetic studies are required
Based on the rough estimates of size and shape from previous experiments, this is mainly for mechanical design. Anyway, this was the approach used in many pilot tests in the past – scaling up the proportions – and many research institutions and companies with limited technical capabilities still use this method today. Reaction kinetics is in the stage of fundamental engineering research, prior to pilot testing. Of course, as I mentioned earlier, someone who just goes through the motions, or a leader who can be easily deceived, is not needed at any time.
In some cases, it is possible to design according to rules such as geometric similarity and flow similarity. Under normal circumstances, dynamic equations are required for design, which can be determined based on pilot tests.
