HG/T20507-2014 states that \"the length of the end of the temperature sensing element immersed in the inner wall of the pipeline should not be less than 50 mm, and should not exceed 125 mm.\" Why? How to explain it?
The smaller the temperature measurement area, the less accurate the readings. For pipes with a diameter of two inches, they either need to be inserted at an angle or after having their diameter adjusted; the insertion depth should not exceed 125 mm. I hadn’t paid attention to this before, but if the temperature probe is too long, it is prone to breaking due to erosion. The typical insertion depth for such probes is between 1/3 and 2/3 of the pipe’s diameter
It is highly recommended to modify the statement that the insertion depth is determined by the pipe diameter. As long as it meets the usage requirements adequately and accurately reflects the actual temperature, it is fine to use it for measurement on the outer wall of the tube.

If the thermometer is inserted too shallowly, it cannot provide accurate readings; if it is inserted too deeply, vibrations may occur, and in severe cases the thermometer can even break. Especially for media with high flow rates such as medium and high-pressure steam, it is not advisable to insert it too deep. Many thermometer manufacturers recalibrate for vibration; API has a formula for calculating vibration. If vibration occurs, measures such as reducing the insertion depth and thickening the casing are generally taken.
