Many people mistakenly think that the arrow indicates the direction of the fluid, but in engineering practice it has a different meaning.
1. The check valve must be installed strictly (installing it in the wrong direction will render it ineffective/dangerous). If installed in the wrong direction or at an incorrect position (with regard to horizontal or vertical installation), it will not provide any protection; instead, it can lead to system leaks, damage to the pump, and even safety accidents.
Stop valve: Standard design with “low inlet, high outlet”. Installing it in the reverse direction (high inlet, low outlet) results in an extremely high opening torque (the medium pressure pushing against the valve disc), severe erosion of the sealing surfaces, and even breakage of the valve stem. However, there are also special operating conditions that require reverse installation; for example, in cases of large diameters (usually ≥DN200), high pressures (PN≥2.5MPa), or when the medium contains particles, it is a more scientific choice to have the high pressure at the inlet and the low pressure at the outlet
Safety valve/pressure relief valve: Its internal structure is unidirectional; if installed in the reverse direction, it loses its protective function, posing a serious safety hazard.
Double/eccentric triple eccentric butterfly valves: rely on eccentricity to achieve sealing; the arrow indicates the pressure direction of the fluid inside the pipe when the valve is closed, not the actual flow direction of the fluid. Installing it in the reverse direction can cause severe internal leakage.
2. Theoretically bidirectional, but it is recommended to follow the arrow direction (for optimal performance). Gate valves: have a symmetrical structure and typically provide bidirectional sealing. However, some designs (such as those with pressure relief holes or check valve seats) have a recommended flow direction; installing them according to the arrows will extend their lifespan.
Standard ball valve: Floating ball valves are usually bidirectional. However, if the valve body has an arrow, it usually indicates the \"recommended pressure side\"; installing it in the reverse direction may affect the seal life.
