I’m not very familiar with optical fibers. Without considering redundancy or backup options, is it necessary to use a two-core fiber optic cable to establish communication between PLCs and DCS systems? Is the fiber optic broadband used at home single-core?
Generally, an optical fiber is connected to a photoelectric converter. It depends on what kind of photoelectric converter you are using. There are photoelectric converters that can both interface and transmit.
Not necessarily; there are currently two types of fiber optic transceivers: single-fiber transceivers and dual-fiber transceivers. As the name implies, it is a single-fiber transceiver; the optical module emits two types of light waves to transmit signals ; A dual-fiber transceiver has a TX port (transmission port) and an RX port (reception port); both ports transmit the same wavelength, with the two fibers crossed.
Personally, I think it’s better to use multiple cores; at the very least, two cores should be sufficient. Communication fibers themselves are not expensive, so saving one fiber doesn’t make much difference. Although the speed of dual-core fibers isn’t much higher, they offer better reliability compared to single-core fibers.

At the very least, one must consider the possibility that the fiber is not functional; how can there be no backup fiber?
Previously, it was always dual-core; with the advancement of technology now, single-core is no worse than dual-core. You can decide for yourself; there are transceivers for dual-core systems, and there are those for single-core systems. Whatever.
