Flow metering is one of the components of measurement science and technology, and it is closely related to the national economy, national defense construction, and scientific research. Flow measurement is widely used in various fields such as industrial and agricultural production, national defense construction, scientific research, foreign trade, and people’s daily lives. To ensure measurement accuracy, regular maintenance is necessary. Below, our factory’s technical team will share with you some of the common methods for maintaining flow meters. 1. Observation method: Utilizing vision, smell, and touch. Sometimes, damaged components will change color, develop bubbles, or show burnt spots; burned-out devices emit a distinct odor; short-circuited chips become hot; and poorly soldered or detached joints can be seen with the naked eye. 2. Comparison method: Two instruments of the same model are required, one of which is operating normally. To use this method, necessary equipment is also required, such as a multimeter, oscilloscope, etc. Based on the nature of comparison, there are voltage comparison, waveform comparison, static impedance comparison, output result comparison, current comparison, etc. The specific method is to operate the faulty instrument and the normal instrument under the same conditions, then measure the signals at certain points and compare the two sets of signals; if there are differences, it can be concluded that the fault lies here. This method requires maintenance personnel to have considerable knowledge and skills. 3. Replacement method: Two instruments of the same model are required, or there must be sufficient spare parts available. Replace a good spare part with the identical component on the faulty machine to see if the fault is resolved. Two instruments of the same model are required, one of which must be in normal operation. To use this method, you also need the necessary equipment. Elimination method: The so-called elimination method is a technique for determining the cause of a fault by inserting and removing various plug-in boards and components within the device. When the instrument returns to normal after removing a certain plug-in board or component, it indicates that the fault lies there. As a highly precise instrument, a flow meter requires strict adherence to its specifications not only during manufacturing and use, but also requires special attention during maintenance in order to prevent it from reaching the end of its useful life prematurely. Common maintenance methods for flowmeters: 1. If the readings are inaccurate, check whether the pipe is not fully filled, i.e., whether there is a two-phase mixture of gas and liquid present. 2. If the table header does not appear, check for issues in the circuit and the connection to the host computer. 3. Judge each specific issue individually; when experience cannot solve a problem, the instrument technician must use the method of elimination. There are too many types of flow meters, each with different working principles; therefore, there is no universal method. What can be said is that for any instrument, the elimination method must be used – starting from the top down (host computer – cabinet – cables – the instrument itself), and from the outside in (external factors – internal factors of the instrument), to gradually identify the issue.
