Resistance boxes were used back in the early 2000s; nowadays, hand-held devices are used for testing.
It’s a bit too dogmatic to insist on using a resistance box; if a multimeter or other instruments can accurately determine the issue, why use a resistance box? Resistor boxes are not omnipotent either. All roads lead to Rome; this director is truly amazing.
Maybe your supervisor suddenly bought a few resistor boxes and now doesn’t have a use for them; we all use signal generators now. Generate resistance, current, pulses. It’s very convenient; this is really essential for traveling at home
There’s nothing wrong with that in itself; it’s acceptable as the only option.

It’s so convenient to have a signal generator with you; after using a resistor box a few times, one loses the urge to carry it around. And for many problems, a resistance box is not even necessary at all
The resistance box is bulky; just buy a 138.5 resistance directly
There’s no need for that; it’s much more convenient to provide each person with a resistor whose standard value is 100 ohms
