This description is too broad. It should be based on the nature of the industry or control requirements to see whether there are corresponding regulations, such as the chemical industry, or if SIS is used. The most common control system does not necessarily require a UPS, but unexpected power loss will obviously cause possible hardware failures, data loss, etc. This risk needs to be assessed whether it can be tolerated. Currently, I found some relevant provisions in API 554 API554 11.3.1 Power Source The primary power source for all process control systems is supplied from a public utility or internal plant generation system. Does the primary power source meet the availability and reliability requirements for the process control systems? If not, additional design considerations should be evaluated. Some examples to increase availability and reliability of the primary power source are: — double-ended electrical substations; — emergency generators; — static transfer switches between two power sources; and — UPS. The process control system power source generally must have high availability and reliability, because it powers the operators interface to the process. This would include the DCS, PLCs, analyzers, alarm systems, field instrumentation, information systems, interface to motor controls and other systems. These systems should be powered from a UPS system that can provide back up power for a minimum of 30 minutes. Care must be taken in the design of the power source to the DCS to avoid a single point of failure causing loss of control.
