The university is like that grade crossing in the bright sunset; after I passed by, the train passed as well, moving further and further away. Four years of life are coming to an end, and in no time I will also become an instrument operator at a chemical plant. I graduated from a chemical engineering university in a certain province. It is an ordinary fourth-tier university with mediocre capabilities. My major is automation, and I mainly study knowledge in the fields of electronics, motion control, and process control. My grades aren’t that great either. Most of my peers in the same field are working in areas such as embedded systems, computing, and electronics; only a few are engaged in process control. In the end, I took a job related to instrumentation at a chemical plant in Anhui. There are only a little over ten days left of school. After graduation, one has to say goodbye to a decade-long campus life and officially become independent. At this moment, I was feeling anxious, both excited and scared. I’m afraid that my abilities aren’t sufficient, and I won’t be able to handle the job. I took out books on instrumentation, control engineering, DCS, etc. to take a look. But I’m irritable; I just can’t concentrate, and I’ve forgotten most of what’s in the book. On the eve of becoming an instrumentator, I am eager to seek advice from my seniors; I would like to know what the main tasks of instrumentators are What skills are needed? What about career planning? On the eve of becoming an instrument operator, I also wish myself success in carrying out my duties diligently.
Stay calm, and work hard to learn once you’re in your position*. Expand your knowledge, go to the sites more often, think carefully, and study diagrams extensively.

It’s great that you have these ideas; it’s much better than when we first started working in the factory. In my opinion, the most important thing is to be able to tolerate loneliness and not forget what you have learned at school.

Especially practical experience in on-site maintenance – it’s not something that can be mastered in just one or two days through textbook knowledge; it requires continuous learning over time before one can become competent in this field. You’re at the beginning of your career, in the prime of your youth. Although you’re currently working in the field of instrumentation, that doesn’t mean you’ll work in this area for the rest of your life; what happens in the future depends on your own efforts. After starting work, learn from experienced colleagues, observe more, ask questions, keep learning, and get hands-on experience. Study hard*, accumulate as much knowledge as possible – my goal is to become an instrumentation engineer! ! If one can become the chief engineer for instruments, the future is bright!
Those who are not pilots: Everyone has gone through this stage of being both confused and eager to learn. At work, one should ask for advice from mentors and seniors, observe more, take action more, use one’s brain, and study with dedication; one can also find time to read books related to one’s specialty.
Instrument automation: conventional instruments, control systems (DCS/SIS/GDS/PLC), on-line analysis instruments (special devices requiring dedicated maintenance). Set a direction for yourself: 1. Work on more complex tasks that require strong logical thinking skills; 2. For field instrumentation, experience is key – learn as much as possible, keep practicing, and read books when you have time; 3. Specializing in online analysis is a niche field where expertise is highly valued

For another round of investment, if one wants to enter the energy sector, they should go to coastal areas such as Jiangsu and Shandong. 3. In the field of instrumentation, which is a large industry, as you mentioned, it involves the maintenance of field instruments, as well as the configuration and maintenance of control systems; there are other roles as well, though they aren’t detailed here. It’s true that anyone can succeed in any field, but in industries with an oversupply of workers, one must put in far more effort than in other industries. Soon, you will be tempted by various things in life, and lose the motivation and drive to keep learning and moving forward; the vast majority of people fail to overcome this challenge. 4. If you want to be at the top of the industry hierarchy, plan your career carefully, resist temptations, and actively work to accumulate more experience.

Once the excitement of working as a field instrument technician in the petrochemical industry fades, one gradually comes to feel that there is little future in instrument maintenance work. Today, process control in enterprises is carried out using DCS systems. Due to their close connection with the production processes, whenever there are issues with operations, operators first assume that it is caused by problems with the instruments. In such cases, the technicians have to spend time checking whether there are indeed issues with the instruments, and they also need to explain the situation to the relevant supervisors. If the supervisor has some knowledge of instruments, it’s easier to explain things, but otherwise, the instruments once again end up being blamed ; Moreover, with the rapid updates and changes in various types of instruments these days, instrument technicians have to invest a lot of effort in learning and researching new knowledge, which places a heavy mental burden on them. On the other hand, operators rely mainly on instruments to carry out their tasks; they only need to start learning and getting familiar with the operations for now, and in the future they won’t need to spend as much time learning, so their mental burden is much lighter than that of instrument technicians. Yet there is a significant difference in salary between instrument technicians and operators, which is highly unfair for what is supposed to be a technical profession. Instrument technicians put in more effort than operators, but receive less in return, which undermines their motivation to work. Their hard work goes unnoticed, and they don’t receive any recognition, making it a truly thankless job. Moreover, when a company decides to promote someone, it first considers factors related to processes, then equipment, and subsequently electrical aspects. Instrumentation is rarely taken into account; the human resources department generally views instrumentation as a supporting role, which leaves those working in this field feeling confused and believing that there is no future in it. As a result, there is little sense of pride in working in instrumentation. Working as an instrument operator also requires time to get the hang of it; instrument work relies half on skills and half on coordination. The difficulty in maintaining instrumentation equipment lies in the fact that the income associated with this work is lower than that in production processes. There is a high turnover rate among instrumentation technicians; aside from limitations due to location and family obligations that prevent them from changing jobs, they often switch employers because of issues related to salary and project conditions. As the saying goes, there may be no prospects for career advancement, but there is at least the possibility of earning more money. Only by changing jobs can one expect an increase in salary, and only by doing so can one persuade their employer to raise their pay!
