Therefore, the core of its installation issues revolves around protecting the precision mechanical components and ensuring that the properties of the medium are suitable. Common installation problems, causes, and solutions for elliptical gear flowmeters: I. Medium cleanliness and filter issues 1. Filters that are not installed or are improperly selected · Problem: This is the most common cause of failures in elliptical gear flowmeters, such as jamming, increased wear, and reduced accuracy. Impurities such as slag, rust, and particles in the pipes can enter the flow meter, wearing out the gears and bearings, or even causing the gears to get stuck. · Requirement: A filter with the appropriate mesh size must be installed upstream of the flow meter (before the inlet). · Solution: ① Choose a Y-type or T-type filter with a mesh size of 40–120, depending on the degree of dirtiness of the medium. ② Clean the filter regularly and check whether the filter screen is in good condition. An increase in filter pressure drop is a sign of blockage. 2. Measuring media containing solid particles · Problem: Using it directly to measure slurries or media with a high content of solid particles will cause rapid wear of the flow meter. · Solution: If the medium contains slight particles, it is necessary to ensure that the filter is effective. For media with a high solid content, it is advisable to avoid using oval gear flow meters and consider other types such as electromagnetic flow meters.

II. Cavitation and Gas Issues 3. Measuring gas-liquid two-phase flow or media containing gas · Issue: The presence of gas (bubbles) in the medium can cause the measurement values to be significantly too high. This is because the gear drives the gas to rotate and count as well, but the volume of gas is much larger than that of an equal amount of liquid. · Solution: ① Ensure that the medium does not release gases (avoid installing it in locations with too low pressure or too high temperature). ②Install an exhaust valve at the high point of the pipeline upstream of the flow meter to discharge gas in advance. ③For easily vaporizable liquids (such as LPG, solvents), a back pressure must be maintained. 4. The installation location is prone to gas accumulation · Problem: Installing the flow meter at the highest point of the pipeline allows gas to accumulate, leading to the inaccurate measurements mentioned above. · Solution: The optimal installation location is the upward section of the pipe, to ensure that the fluid fills the pipe from bottom to top. Avoid installing at the highest point of the pipeline.
III. Pipeline Design and Installation Direction 5. Incorrect installation direction · Problem: Elliptical gear flow meters have strict requirements regarding the installation direction (usually, an arrow on the housing indicates the flow direction). Installing it in the reverse direction can cause the medium pressure to push the gear toward the shaft end, leading to increased wear or even damage. · Solution: Install strictly in the direction indicated by the arrows. When installed horizontally, it is generally required that the gauge head (pointer and counter) face upward to facilitate reading and prevent wear at the gear shaft ends. 6. Requirements for straight sections before and after · Issue: The requirements for straight sections are not that strict, but an extremely uneven flow velocity distribution at the inlet (such as when installed right behind elbows or valves) may have a slight impact on accuracy. · Solution: It is generally recommended that the upstream straight section be ≥ 2D, and the downstream straight section be ≥ 1D. The most important thing is to leave space for cleaning the filter. IV. Operation and Maintenance Issues 7. Incorrect installation of bypass pipes · Issue: The flow meter gets stuck, requiring the entire system to be shut down for maintenance, which affects production continuity. The flow also needs to be stopped when cleaning the filter. · Solution: It is recommended to install a bypass pipeline. This allows for the maintenance, cleaning, or replacement of the flow meter without interrupting the process.
8. Incorrect startup sequence and flow overload · Problem: If the upstream valve is opened suddenly with the outlet valve of the flow meter closed, the impact of high-speed fluid can cause a \"water hammer\" effect on the gears and bearings, leading to damage. · Solution: ① Correct sequence for starting and stopping: First, open the bypass valve; then slowly open the inlet valve to allow the medium to fill the pipeline and displace air. After that, slowly open the outlet valve, and finally close the bypass valve slowly. ② The shutdown sequence is reversed: first open the bypass valve, then close the inlet valve and the outlet valve. ③Ensure that the flow rate remains within the meter’s rated range; operating beyond this range for extended periods will shorten its lifespan. 9. Temperature and pressure limits · Problem: If the temperature or pressure of the medium exceeds the meter’s rated values, it can damage the internal seals (such as graphite bearings and O-rings), resulting in leaks. · Solution: When selecting a meter, be sure to confirm that the temperature and pressure ranges of the process medium fall within the allowable limits of the flowmeter.
