Guided wave radar level gauges are a commonly used type of level measurement instrument in the chemical industry. It operates on the principle of time-domain reflection, and reliable measurement can be achieved only when the liquid level is between the top blind zone and the bottom blind zone of the instrument. Working principle: The guided wave radar level gauge is based on the time-domain reflection principle. The electromagnetic pulse emitted by the instrument travels at the speed of light along the waveguide rod or waveguide cable. When the pulse encounters the surface of the medium being tested, part of the signal is reflected to form an echo, which then returns to the transmitting device along the same path. By measuring the propagation time of the pulse between transmission and echo, the distance can be calculated, thereby determining the liquid level height. Application range: The guided wave radar level gauge is suitable for use in water storage tanks, acid and alkali storage tanks, silos for solid particles, small oil storage tanks, etc. It can measure both conductive and non-conductive media, as well as corrosive media, such as those found in coal silos, oil tanks, and acid tanks. It can measure any dielectric with a dielectric constant of ≥1.4, and is typically suitable for dielectrics with a viscosity of ≤500 cst that do not tend to stick together. Usage limitations: Guided-wave radar level gauges require specific installation space, and the appropriate model must be selected based on the dielectric constant of the medium. Main advantages: 1. Stable measurement under fluctuating conditions. In situations where there is stirring inside the tank and significant fluctuations in the medium level, a guided-wave radar level gauge with a fixed base provides more stable readings compared to ordinary radar level gauges, offering a clear advantage. 2. Suitable for small tanks or complex installation environments. When the tank is small or there are many internal interferences, conventional radar level gauges are often difficult to use; whereas guided wave radar level gauges, as the signal travels along the guided wave rod, are less affected by installation space and interferences. 3. It has greater adaptability to different dielectric constants. The beam emitted by conventional radar level gauges is divergent; in media with low dielectric constants, the signal becomes weaker, resulting in poor measurement stability ; In contrast, the signal from a guided-wave radar level gauge propagates along the guided wave rod, making it suitable for media with lower dielectric constants. Main disadvantages: 1. Not suitable for media that are corrosive, sticky, or require high food-grade standards. Ordinary radar level gauges use non-contact measurement, while guided wave radar level gauges use contact measurement; therefore, they are not suitable for highly corrosive or sticky media, nor are they recommended for applications with high food-grade requirements. 2. The installation and maintenance of guided wave radar level gauges are relatively complex; the long length of the guided wave rods or cables poses certain difficulties in these processes. Furthermore, its length must be determined based on operating conditions; it has poor interchangeability, and its selection and maintenance are more complicated than those of conventional radar level gauges. 3. Limited measurement range: Guided wave radar level gauges have a relatively short measurement range, whereas conventional radar level gauges are commonly used in large tanks with a diameter of 30–40 meters; in some applications, their measurement range can reach up to 60 meters.
