As the title suggests, in a coal chemical plant equipped with multiple gasification units, how can the safe and reliable operation of the plant’s flare system be ensured during the startup and shutdown of each individual gasification unit? Mainly, it is the operating condition in which flare gas emissions from the remaining process units may occur.
The flare emission volume for the entire plant is determined during design by taking into account safe emissions in case of emergencies at various units.
The operating conditions of the gasification furnace do not constitute an emergency emission situation
The emission rate of the flare is generally determined by the design team based on a comprehensive consideration of the maximum instantaneous discharge volume of the entire system. When the plant is in operation, this discharge volume is not at its maximum; rather, it is the combined discharge volume from those sections that require emergency pressure relief during an emergency shutdown that determines the maximum discharge volume for the flare design. For example, during normal operation, if a problem occurs in a certain unit, all the gas from the vaporization process is vented; moreover, a certain station must release pressure urgently for safety reasons. This results in an overall amount of gas that needs to be vented, which includes both the gas from the vaporization process and that from this particular unit. The maximum venting capacity of the flare system must be sufficient to handle such amounts of gas.
Today, flares are classified into atmospheric flares, emergency flares, acidic gas flares, etc. Depending on the specific process requirements, the amount of gas to be vented is calculated based on the total volume that needs to be vented urgently in an emergency situation; generally, this amount is 120% of the total volume to be vented from all relevant process units, while no venting is required for other units. Coordination by the dispatch team is necessary for this purpose.
