Acetylene is an important basic raw material for organic synthesis. Since the 1970s, the continuous development of the petrochemical industry has provided large amounts of relatively inexpensive ethylene and propylene, and in many fields acetylene has been replaced by ethylene and propylene. Due to the varying resource conditions and economic development levels of different countries, acetylene still holds a significant role in organic synthesis and the organic chemical industry. The main raw materials for acetylene production are calcium carbide and natural gas. The calcium carbide method is the oldest acetylene synthesis technique, and it remains widely used in industry to this day; however, in industrially developed countries, the raw materials for acetylene production have shifted to inexpensive natural gas and liquid hydrocarbons. Producing acetylene from natural gas is more economical and environmentally friendly than producing it via the calcium carbide method, and it has become the dominant approach for acetylene production in industrially developed countries. With the growing environmental awareness of people and the increasing availability of natural gas resources, producing acetylene using natural gas as a raw material will become the trend in the acetylene industry, offering bright prospects.
