On May 22, a kick-off meeting was held for the second phase of the coal-to-natural gas (SNG) project at Inner Mongolia HuiNeng Coal Chemical Co., Ltd., which uses the multi-nozzle opposed water-coal slurry gasification technology developed by East China University of Science and Technology. The project plans to install 3 multi-nozzle opposed water-coal slurry gasifiers with a diameter of 4.0 meters; this marks the first time that multi-nozzle opposed water-coal slurry gasification technology is applied in the field of coal-to-natural gas production. 　　The HuiNeng coal-to-natural gas project was approved by the **Development and Reform Commission in December 2009; it is one of the **coal-to-natural gas demonstration projects. The first phase of this project began operations with full-scale trial production in October 2014. The second phase of the project utilizes a multi-nozzle opposed water-coal slurry gasification technology to produce syngas. The gasifier selected, with a pressure of 6.5 MPa and a diameter of 4.0 meters, is the super-large gasifier intended for construction as part of a key research and development project during the 13th Five-Year Plan period, carried out by East China University of Science and Technology and Yankuang Group; this gasifier is capable of processing 4,000 tons of coal per day. It represents the largest water-coal slurry gasifier of its kind that is currently being planned for construction in the world. For the second-phase project, there are two gasifiers in operation with one as a backup; the effective gas output (CO+H2) per gasifier is 210,000 standard cubic meters per hour. 　　Since the operation of the first 1,000-ton-scale demonstration unit for the multi-nozzle opposed water-coal slurry gasification technology in 2005, a series of gasification units has been developed, with parameters such as the scale of a single furnace, pressure level, and size of the gasification furnace serving as criteria. This includes scale series categorized by the daily coal processing capacity of 1,000 tons, 1,500 tons, 2,000 tons, 2,500 tons, 3,000 tons, and 4,000 tons per furnace; pressure level series defined by operating pressures of 6.5 MPa, 4.0 MPa (including 4.2 MPa), and 1.5 MPa; and size series based on the inner diameter of the gasification furnace’s metal shell being 2.8 meters, 3.2 meters, 3.4 meters, 3.6 meters, 3.88 meters, 4.0 meters, and 4.2 meters. At present, the multi-nozzle opposed water-coal slurry gasification technology has been applied in 55 projects (including 2 overseas), with a total of 150 gasifiers, thereby achieving wide-scale adoption of this water-coal slurry gasification technology. 　　Inner Mongolia HuiNeng Company is a high-tech coal chemical enterprise that uses coal as raw material and efficient, clean conversion technologies to produce clean energy sources such as coal-to-natural gas and liquefied natural gas (LNG).
