I’m seeking expert advice on whether pressure has an impact on the space velocity; does an increase in pressure result in a longer residence time for the process gas and exhaust gases inside the reactor? A longer residence time should lead to a lower space velocity, but why do some sources state that an increase in pressure actually increases the space velocity? Please ask an expert to help answer
Of course it has an impact; excessive pressure affects normal production
It can be understood in this way: if you increase the pressure in the Claus unit, it means that the pressure control valve connecting the Claus unit to the exhaust system will inevitably become stuck. As the valve position decreases, the pressure in the Claus unit rises, which means that the driving force within the exhaust system increases. Consequently, the air flow rate in the exhaust system also increases. In contrast, the air flow rate in the Claus system remains unchanged, because the volume of gas is constant. To maintain a certain pressure, a certain amount of gas must be discharged; according to the law of conservation, the air flow rate in the Claus unit doesn’t change much
Both the Claus reactor and the hydrogenation reactor for exhaust gas treatment have requirements regarding space velocity. The pressure in the Claus system is related to the amount of acidic gas to be treated; increasing the pressure can only be achieved by reducing the control valve value in the exhaust gas system
