Recently, thanks to the efforts of the Coal Chemical Products Sub-committee under the National Coal Chemical Industry Standards Technical Committee, which is headed by the Southwest Research Institute, five standards, including those related to the direct liquefaction of coal to produce mixed aromatics, were approved for issuance by the State Administration for Market Regulation and the Standardization Administration Committee. These standards will come into effect on February 1, 2019. The five **standards approved for release this time are GB/T 36562-2018 \"Mixed Aromatics Produced by Direct Coal Liquefaction\", GB/T 36563-2018 \"Gasoline Component Oils Produced from Methanol\", GB/T 36564-2018 \"Gasoline Component Oils from Coal-Based FTO Synthesis\", GB/T 36565-2018 \"Naphtha from Coal-Based FTO Synthesis\", and GB/T 36566-2018 \"Naphtha from Direct Coal Liquefaction\". The formulation and implementation of these five standards help to promote the sales of products by coal-to-oil enterprises and ensure product quality, providing a set of rules and guidelines for both suppliers and consumers; they are of great significance for both coal chemical production enterprises and end-user companies. To address the energy structure issue in China characterized by a shortage of oil and gas and an abundance of coal, the country has launched three demonstration projects for coal-to-oil conversion: direct coal liquefaction (CTL), indirect coal liquefaction, and methanol-to-gasoline (MTG), in order to identify the most suitable process route for converting coal into oil. The Party and its leaders attach great importance to coal-to-oil demonstration projects, and have issued specific instructions in this regard. The 4 million tons per year coal indirect liquefaction demonstration project carried out by Shenhua Ningmei Group has been successfully put into operation. This is of great significance for enhancing China’s ability to ensure its own energy supply, promoting the clean and efficient use of coal, and facilitating the development of ethnic minority regions. It represents a valuable exploration of ways to achieve energy security through efficient, clean, and low-carbon development, and it is an important achievement of the strategy of driving development through innovation.
