Latest Progress on Inner Mongolia JiuTai New Materials’ Project to Produce 1 Million Tons of Coal-Based Ethylene Glycol Per Year. Author/Source: Refining & Chemical Industry Updates. From November 11 to 15, a review meeting was held at Hualu Design Institute for the methanol unit, sulfur recovery unit, intermediate tank area, 90% scale model, and 60% scale distillation model of Inner Mongolia JiuTai New Materials’ project aimed at producing 1 million tons of coal-based ethylene glycol per year. It is reported that the meeting conducted a thorough review of aspects such as equipment installation, pipeline layout, the locations for installing instruments and valves, and the setup of maintenance platforms, thereby laying a foundation for the design work. Hao Xiaobin, the company’s deputy chief engineer, and relevant technical staff attended the meeting. From November 11th to 22nd, review meetings for the ethylene glycol process package of Inner Mongolia JiuTai New Materials Company’s project aimed at producing 1 million tons of coal-based ethylene glycol per year were held at the company’s headquarters in Davy, London, and its R&D center in Stockton, UK. Technical personnel from Hualu Technology, Davy Company, and the New Materials Company attended the meeting. During the two-week review session, discussions were held on various technical aspects such as equipment, general layout diagrams, 3D models of the hydrogen carboxylation high-pressure pipelines, instrumentation and control systems, electrical components, and process flows. The technical issues faced by the ethylene glycol plant were discussed one by one, and meeting minutes were prepared, which provided a solid foundation for the design of the plant and the ordering of necessary equipment. The 1-million-ton-per-year ethylene glycol production project of Inner Mongolia Jiutai New Materials Co., Ltd. is located in the Tuoketuo Industrial Park of Hohhot Helingeer New Area. The project uses coal as raw material, and employs domestically developed gasification technology for coal to produce syngas, as well as Davy Company’s hydroxymethylation process to manufacture ethylene glycol. In September 2017, the 1 million-ton ethylene glycol project of Inner Mongolia Jiu Tai Group entered into a project engineering design contract with Hualu Technology. The scope includes all process units other than the air separation unit, gasification unit, shift unit, and low-temperature methanol washing unit, as well as utility systems, auxiliary facility works, and the overall project design. On May 21, 2018, the signing ceremony for the technical contract of Inner Mongolia Jutai New Materials Co., Ltd.’s 1 million tons per year coal-based ethylene glycol production project was held at Hualu Engineering Technology Co., Ltd., marking Hualu Technology as the first engineering company in China to collaborate with Johnson Matthey and adopt its ethylene glycol technology. The 1 million-ton per year ethylene glycol production project of Inner Mongolia Jiutai New Materials Co., Ltd. is located in the Tuoketuo Industrial Park in Hohhot. With a total investment of 13.3 billion yuan, the project uses aerospace-based coal gasification and Shell’s gasification technologies, low-temperature methanol washing technology, as well as the world-leading formaldehyde hydroxymethylation technology developed by Davy Company to produce ethylene glycol. Among them, Air Products Company of the United States (AP Company) invested 4.8 billion yuan to construct the air separation and gasification areas. The project construction period is 3 years, with trial operations planned for 2020 and full production starting in 2021. In June 2017, the plan for the project with an annual production capacity of 1 million tons of ethylene glycol was revised; it was changed from producing 1.7 million tons of coal-based olefins and related specialty products per year to producing 1 million tons of ethylene glycol per year.
