To protect the fan. C. To avoid pressure buildup in the upstream equipment. D. To increase the operating pressure. The answer given is D. It seems to be C to me. Answers C and D are contradictory; D can increase pressure, so why can’t it cause pressure buildup upstream? So, in reality, the height of the sulfur-sealed tank remains constant, which results in a constant back pressure (the calculation is p=ρgh). Its function is similar to that of a safety valve; therefore, it is not possible for pressure to build up upstream
