Recently, a scientific evaluation meeting for the Shanxi provincial key technology project related to oil extraction through flash hydrogen pyrolysis was held in Beijing. Experts attending the meeting believed that this technology fills a gap in the field of high-pressure hydrogenation pyrolysis of coal dust, providing guidance for the clean and efficient utilization of coal in China. According to An Yingbao, deputy general manager of Sino-US New Energy Technology R&D (Shanxi) Co., Ltd., the pilot project capable of processing 50 tons of coal per day using this technology was put into operation on August 14, 2017, in Shuozhou, Shanxi. Using high-temperature hydrogen-rich gas as a heat carrier, this project successfully achieved rapid pyrolysis of coal powder, with a tar yield exceeding the values calculated by the Gejin method. After more than two years of pilot testing, the company overcame technical challenges such as gas-solid separation and achieved the objectives set for the tests, thereby having met the preliminary conditions for industrial production. The flash hydrogen pyrolysis oil extraction technology overcomes the limitation in domestic pyrolysis processes, which are confined to atmospheric pressure and without hydrogen use; it achieves a breakthrough by enabling rapid, high-temperature, high-pressure, hydrogenated pyrolysis to take place simultaneously within the same reaction vessel. Compared with traditional indirect coal-to-oil conversion, this technology can directly convert coal into oil in a single step; it does not require a catalyst, has a short process flow, and is simple in operation, although the technical requirements are higher than those of traditional processes.
