The achievements related to the three main technical approaches in modern coal chemistry have all won first prizes in the **Science and Technology Progress Awards. http://img.yf116.cn/image/img/20211105/1016583701881.jpg On January 8, 2018, at the **Science and Technology Awards Ceremony, the project “Development and Application of Large-Scale Modern Coal Chemical Technology for Coal-to-Oil Products/Olefins” won the first prize in the **Science and Technology Progress Award. This project overcame various global challenges related to the scale-up of coal-to-oil/product and coal-to-olefins processes, the manufacturing of key equipment as well as ultra-large and thick-scale equipment, the stability and reliability of system integration, and the safe and stable long-term operation of such facilities. It also addressed the technical barriers associated with high water consumption and high carbon dioxide emissions in large-scale coal chemical operations. As a result, technologies for converting coal directly into liquid products on a scale of millions of tons, as well as technologies for producing olefins on a scale of 600,000 tons per year, were developed. These technologies reached an internationally leading level, enabling China to take the lead in modern coal chemical technology and establishing its position as a world leader in this field. http://img.yf116.cn/image/img/20211105/1017433706392.jpg On November 3, 2021, at the **Science and Technology Awards Ceremony, the “Innovation and Development of a Complete Set of Technologies for Indirect Coal Liquefaction with a Capacity of 4 million tons per year – Ningxia Coal Project” won the first prize in the **Science and Technology Progress Award. This project overcame the key technical challenges associated with large-scale indirect coal liquefaction, enabling the transition from pilot-scale operations of a thousand tons per year to an industrial scale of 4 million tons per year. It achieved significant innovations in areas such as the basic theories of indirect coal liquefaction, key technologies, major equipment and materials, engineering scaling and system integration, as well as energy and water conservation. A replicable and scalable set of technologies for indirect coal liquefaction was developed, resulting in the creation of the world’s largest single-unit indirect coal liquefaction facility with a capacity of 4 million tons per year. This facility operates in a safe, stable, and clean manner, and its overall technical level is among the best in the world. The three modern coal chemical technologies involved in the **First Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress** represent the main technical approaches in the coal chemical industry of **Energy Group** at present. The direct coal liquefaction process is applied in **Energy Group’s Ordos project, which is the world’s first demonstration facility for direct coal liquefaction on a scale of one million tons per year**. This process features independent intellectual property rights; it uses coal as raw material and high-efficiency nano-catalysts from the “863” program to produce clean petroleum products through three hydrogenation reactions under high temperature and pressure conditions. The designed production capacity is 1.08 million tons per year of petroleum products, with the main products being diesel, naphtha, liquefied gas, etc. The coal-to-olefins process is applied in the **Energy Group Baotou Coal-to-Olefins Pilot Project**, where coal serves as the raw material; through processes such as gasification of coal to produce methanol, conversion of methanol into olefins, and polymerization of olefins, polyethylene and polypropylene products are manufactured. The annual production capacity is 1.8 million tons of methanol, 300,000 tons of polyethylene, and 300,000 tons of polypropylene. The coal indirect liquefaction process is applied to the world’s largest coal-to-oil project operated by Ningmei Coal-to-Oil Branch of the Energy Group – the 4 million tons per year coal indirect liquefaction demonstration project. Using coal as raw material, syngas is produced through the independently developed Shenning furnace; under the action of Fischer-Tropsch catalysts, this syngas is converted into oil products.
