On October 23, the launch ceremony for the pilot project aimed at producing ethylene glycol on a thousand-ton scale through the catalytic hydrogenation of biomass (straw sugar) was held successfully at Zhongyuan Dahuahua. This project was developed jointly by the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Zhongke Baiyijin, Henan Energy Research Institute, and Zhongyuan Dahuahua Company. Sun Yongzhen, Vice Mayor of Puyang City; Cui Faka, Deputy Director of the Henan Energy Research Institute; Shi Yuezhi, Party Secretary and Chairman of Zhongyuan Dahua Company; Wang Feng, Assistant to the Director of the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics; Yi Aimin, Partner of Keyuan Industrial Fund; and Zheng Mingyuan, Head of the Bio-based Ethylene Glycol Research Group, attended the launch ceremony and delivered speeches. At the launch ceremony, Zheng Mingyuan, head of the research group on bio-based ethylene glycol, and relevant experts provided a detailed presentation on the project’s technical approach, construction plan, technical upgrade schedule, and the infrastructure requirements for pilot-scale production. It is reported that the biomass-based low-carbon ethylene glycol project uses biomass such as straw sugar as raw materials to produce low-carbon ethylene glycol through catalytic conversion. Biomass feedstocks such as straw sugar are renewable alternative energy sources, representing a development direction to replace energy sources like oil and coal. The technological approach for producing ethylene glycol from biomass offers advantages in terms of sustainability and green development. It can effectively reduce greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to global environmental and ecological development. Biomass clean energy is one of the **seven strategic basic industries with the greatest potential for development**, and it represents a direction supported by energy industrialization policies. Developing biomass energy is also highly beneficial for ensuring energy security, alleviating resource shortages, and reducing environmental pollution. Moreover, biomass has a wide range of sources, and the production costs at scale are expected to decrease significantly, offering broad prospects for development. At present, the project has completed laboratory pilot tests and successfully synthesized high-quality polyester products. The pilot-scale production of ethylene glycol via catalytic hydrogenation of thousand-ton quantities of straw sugar, developed through joint efforts, will be carried out at Zhongyuan Dahua. This will also lay a solid foundation for the subsequent development of a ten-thousand-ton scale process package, thereby facilitating the large-scale industrial application of this technology. Experts from Puyang City and the project’s participating organizations attended the launch ceremony and inspected the site designated for the construction of the pilot plant.
