Successful Trial Operation of Fire Protection System for Zhongtai Coal Coking’s 200,000-ton/year Methanol Project Author/Source: Henan Petrochemical News Network Date: 2020-07-06 Clicks: 43 On July 3, good news came from the site of Zhongtai Coal Coking’s project for producing methanol from coker gas at a rate of 200,000 tons per year: the trial operation of the fire water supply system was successful, indicating that the entire fire protection water supply system is now ready for use in production. It is understood that the production areas for methanol at this company are all classified as Class A fire hazard areas. To ensure the safety and reliability of all production processes once operations begin, the company has installed a dedicated fire protection system featuring a ring network layout; pressure-stabilizing and pressure-reducing fire hydrants are available, and a fire monitor protection system has been set up around the methanol storage tanks. At the same time, fire pump stations, a foam fire extinguishing system, and two rectangular reinforced concrete fire storage tanks with a capacity of 2,400 cubic meters were also constructed. The fire water storage tank is also equipped with functions for liquid level detection, high and low level alarms, and automatic water replenishment, to meet the requirements for fire fighting water storage. Before startup, the company, in collaboration with the general contractor, supervision unit, construction unit, and commissioning unit, developed a scientific commissioning plan for the fire protection piping system. It carried out thorough inspections of the pipe connections on site, the opening and closing status of various valves within the system, as well as the system’s programming logic. Additionally, the relevant equipment within the system was tested in stages, in accordance with the requirements for commissioning. Regarding the issues identified during the sectional commissioning process, the company’s commissioning team promptly organized technical personnel and operational staff to work together to identify the causes, formulate solutions, and resolve the problems quickly, thereby ensuring the safe and smooth progress of the commissioning process. During the operation, the on-site personnel followed a systematic sequence of procedures: installation of temporary measures, inspection of pipelines, filling the system with water, increasing pressure, maintaining pressure, conducting inspections of the system, recording pressure test results, removing temporary measures, and protecting the finished product. They also checked the lubrication status of mechanical components and closely monitored the operation of the system. Once it was confirmed that all conditions for testing were met, the fire pump was started, marking the beginning of the commissioning phase. Ultimately, after 5 days of efforts by various parties, all parameters of the fire protection system met the standards, and the trial operation was successful.
